How long do coffee beans last?
We think about the "rule of threes" when it comes to coffee beans:
- You DON'T want to consume coffee beans within 3 days of roasting. They emit a lot carbon dioxide in this period and won't taste good!
- After 3 days, the OPTIMAL time to consume your beans is then up until 3 weeks after roasting.
- While coffee beans never expire, it is best to consume them within 3 months so they don't go stale.
Your Coffee Presto bag is stamped with the roasting date for your reference.
Do coffee beans expire?
No, but will oxidise (go stale) over time and lose their intensity and flavour.
what's the best way to store coffee beans?
Best practice is to store your coffee beans at the temperature you're going to grind them at.
Don't expose them to extreme temperatures (contrary to popular belief, don't refrigerate your beans!). You'll want to keep them away from extreme heat as well, i.e. don't store them in front of a window.
Our Coffee Presto bags are great for storing coffee beans. They have a one way gas valve to let carbon dioxide out. They also have an air tight seal so oxygen is prevented from coming in, and to prevent exposure to light.
For a more permanent coffee storage solution, try products like Airscape containers (particularly recommended if you’re going to grind your own beans!)
Why do bags have gas valves on them?
Freshly coasted coffee beans produce carbon dioxide. Without a gas valve, the bag will explode!
**Top tip: if you buy coffee bean bags WITHOUT a valve, it means that they have not been freshly roasted when bagged.
